What’s Good Dread? - P.S.1 Warm Up pt.3

Wow. Yesterday was the last Warm Up for the season :-( and it was insane!! My favorite performance was by the Ex-Models - Check them!

I managed to take a few snaps of some beautiful people. Thank you to everyone I worked with and met this summer for a wonderful experience and the inspiration to carry my camera around much more often.

What’s Good Dread? - P.S.1 Warm Up pt.2

I’ve got some new photos with new and improved captions! Once again, a huge thank you to the lovely people. I’m sort of shy about approaching people but everyone is sooooooooo nice & friendly.

The performance du jour was the Wunmi show. High energy and very fun which helped us perform a collective anti-rain dance since no one could resist shaking something.  And it worked… not a drop fell from the sky.

Natty Dreadlocks ‘pon the Mountain Top - The Return of Bad Brains

Bad Brains

When I first heard of Bad Brains and their rasta-laced-punk as a teen, I felt like that was my official invitation to jump head first into the punk scene.

And now they are back.

I’ve been listening to their latest release, Build a Nation for weeks now and I have to say that it is one of my favorite releases of the summer. If you are a Bad Brains fan, then this needs to be in your collection and if you are not… then open up wide, I promise it won’t hurt a bit.

What’s Good Dread? - P.S.1 Warm Up pt.1

I know it has been a while but I have returned. Would you believe that it has been a year since TheDreadlockResource.com has gone live? I have to bake a cake!

Inspired by the P.S.1 Warm Up sessions where I am volunteering and having a FANTASTIC time meeting and greeting beautiful people, I’m breaking out the camera and snapping away. Thank you to everyone who mugged for the camera… you all are the best!

Dreadlocks & Football

Going back to sportsmen, I found this interesting article (though the writer seems to be a bit confused about dreadlocks themselves at times) regarding American Footballers and the danger of having long hair with input from players. I don’t know how I feel about the idea that the “hair is part of the uniform”, but more importantly I think it is poor sportsmanship to use someone’s hair to grab, tackle, throw etc. them by. It seems that all is fair in love and football.

On the other hand, why can’t they tuck their hair into their jerseys or tie it back?

Kenyan Authorities Discriminate Against Dreadlocks

Warning - The last line is the clincher.

“When one sees a rasta (a person wearing dreadlocks), one doubts their character.”

“Some of you are selling cannabis and other drugs at the beach,” Mr Mwayele told the participants.

“The Government cannot allow this. You must reform and adjust, follow the law and be good citizens,” he said.

George Smith Gives His Dreadlocks to Charity

George Smith Gives His Dreadlocks to Charity

After all the hoopla this year with opponents going after his hair on the playing field, rugby star George Smith decided it was time to let go of his hair and I can’t think of a more noble way to do it then for charity.

Canteen is a New Zealand organization which helps teenager with cancer to learn to live with and beyond the disease. In September, George’s wife cut off his hair and it went up for auction with all proceeds going to Canteen. At the last count on Sept. 22., it was $A865 (approx. $550+ in US dollars). I can’t find information on the final price, but if you know, feel free to chime in.

Kudos to you George. That was a great way to move on from your dreadlocks.

Skateboard Prodigy Nyjah Huston

image11 years old.

11 years old, the youngest competitor on the pro circuit and doing things people three times his age have never dreamed of as a member of the Element Skateboard Team (great videos there!). Sounds like skateboard wiz kid Nyjah Huston has a very bright future ahead of him.

Ignorant Stereotype : Sheriff Jack Strain is a Jerk

I just came across this article and I am appalled and saddened by it in its entirety, but this specifically caught my attention :

“...Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain warning people with dreadlocks and “chee wee” hairstyles that they will be targeted if found wandering the streets of the North Shore, race relations in the greater New Orleans area have hit rock bottom...”

I want to know how are dreadlocks or any hairstyle a deterimining factor as to if you’ll be targeted by the police. I guess you need to keep an eye on people with dreadlocks in Louisiana since they are all shady criminals. Nice.

And what exactly is a “chee wee” hairstyle??? If you are familiar with this term, please let me know.

Stereotyping is wrong and narrow minded and the last place it should come from is a Sheriff. It’s frightening that people can say such things and get away with it.

While the novelty of Katrina is over and it is not as talked about as it once was, Louisiana is still a mess on many levels and it will be like this for as long as this tug-of-war goes on.
